On this note, I read an essay on the topic of "said," and the author made this point: Don't be absurd.
Word choice is great, but if you have a whole dialogue exchange of "quibbled" and "grumbled" and "gurgled," it just gets silly. So, know that there's nothing wrong with just saying "said" once in a while.
Also, (and this is my favorite approach) realize that dialogue tags can be avoided altogether.
Athoran glanced up, his ears perked up with interest. "What do you mean?"
No "Athoran said" necessary. The action implies that it's him speaking. This approach is very nice, and removes a lot of the problems. However, don't use it exclusively, because it can get old after awhile. Every once in a while, the audience likes to just be told who's talking, rather than guessing for themselves.
