A laugh rang out, startling the birds from their trees in the silence of the dawn. It was a crisp morning, the sunlight still pale, dew still lingering on the grass. A minute ago, it might even have been called tranquil. But not now.
"I told you! Didn't I tell you?!"
The laughing wolf danced in the cold air, his plumed tail waving merrily as he fidgeted, waiting for his companion to catch up.
"Come on!"[/b]
Slowly, sedately, the second figure emerged. If the first wolf's enthusiasm was perhaps a little over the top, then she more than made up for it. no one could be fooled into thinking she wanted to be here - her expression as she regarded the male was nothing short of murderous.
Oblivious to any hostility - or perhaps just not bothered by what threat the smaller female might pose - he continued to dance around her in tight circles, barking merrily the whole time. Finally, a sharp snap at his neck made him keep his distance, and he sobered considerably.
"Oh, come on. Don't be like that - we've found the packlands! We've found a home!"
His waving tail slowed as he paused in front of her, occasionally having to step back since she made no effort to slow her steady, monotonous march.
"Anyone would think I was leading you to your death, you look so miserable! Cheer up - you know you have such a pretty smile!"
This last remark earned him a harsh nip on the ear, and he whined, backing away.
They continued side by side in silence, their roles reversed - the female held an air of triumph, a smirk playing at her lips, whilst the male now appeared dejected, conceding defeat.
"We should howl."
He muttered quietly after some time, not looking at her - not that he could, for she walked on his blind side.
"We?"
The first word the female uttered, and it was icy, her tone conveying in no uncertain terms that there was no 'we' here.
He looked like he was about to reply for a moment, his expression hurt, but after a brief hesitation he raised his head and let out a long call. Please, he prayed silently to ay God that might lend an ear, please...
